Woolstores, Fremantle

The project revitalises one of Fremantle’s most significant heritage sites, preserving the Wool Stores’ distinctive industrial character while establishing a contemporary mixed-use precinct in the city’s north-west. Building on detailed studies of the site’s urban role, heritage significance and structural qualities, the design embraces adaptive reuse as the most sustainable and civic-minded approach.

Carefully calibrated removals and new insertions bring daylight, clarity and permeability to the deep floor plates, opening the building to its surrounding streets while retaining the strength and texture of its brick and timber fabric. The original 1928 structure is transformed into more than 10,000sqm of office and commercial space, with its impressive timber frame left fully visible. Above the historic façade, 39 townhouses and apartments and over 180 co-living homes are introduced, their material expression clearly distinguished from the existing fabric.
Across the precinct, landscaped plazas, mews and communal spaces create an active public realm that encourages movement and social connection, while the diverse mix of homes and workplaces contributes to Fremantle’s economic vitality. Together, these elements position the Wool Stores as a landmark of design excellence, adaptive reuse and urban renewal.
