The heritage-listed former Weeties Factory (c.1930) was converted into 13 apartments in 1990. Our brief asked us to reimagine three of these apartments as a single, contemporary family home within the industrial shell.

Our design liberates the new plan from the constraints imposed by existing window and door locations. New glazed and opalescent walls pull away from the heritage brickwork to the north and south, transforming a dark compartmentalised labyrinth of rooms into a spacious light-filled volume. The home is composed with unexpected drama; bold gestures explore texture, light and colour; a steel spiral staircase creates a sculptural focal point, and a sinuous mezzanine floats from the orginal structural steel above. A lush internal garden contains a dark circular “swimming hole”, while the red carpeted guest room and cayenne terrazzo bathroom with a circular skylight celebrate the juxtaposition between heritage fabric and contemporary expression.
