This project brings new life to a much-loved East Fremantle landmark, restoring the Royal George Hotel as a vibrant hospitality venue and introducing a new residential building on the triangular site to its north.
The Royal George
Long vacant and slowly deteriorating, the Royal George has stood as a familiar silhouette above George Street—its double-storey form and distinctive cupola a constant presence in the local memory. The redevelopment returns this heritage building to active use, with food, beverage, boutique accommodation and artisan spaces that reinforce the neighbourhood’s character and contribute to its social and economic vitality.

The restoration focuses on revealing the hotel’s original fabric and generous proportions, allowing its civic presence to re-emerge. In parallel, the new nine-storey residential building responds carefully to the complexities of its tight, irregular site. Its form steps back from the street to maintain the visual primacy of the cupola, rising subtly to create a counterpoint at the opposite end of the block. The façade is articulated in zinc cladding—a contemporary material choice that echoes the roof forms and textures of surrounding houses.
The 23 new apartments bring much-needed housing diversity to East Fremantle, supporting local population growth through thoughtful urban infill. Together, the restored hotel and the new residential building create a complementary pairing: one honouring the past, the other shaping the future. The result is a reactivated precinct that restores a community icon and anchors a new generation of life along George Street.
