The Margaret River Hotel project restores one of the region’s most recognisable landmarks while expanding its capacity as a contemporary hospitality destination. The brief calls for a sensitive renewal of the 1936 building and its later extension, reinstating their architectural clarity, improving the hotel’s relationship with Bussell Highway, and introducing new accommodation that reflects the character and landscape of Margaret River.

Intrusive additions to the original buildings are stripped back and render is painstakingly removed, revealing the presence and proportion of the original building. Workshops with the client focused on aligning design decisions with operational needs, guest experience and servicing efficiencies. A new extension adds 17 additional rooms – bringing the total to 30 – and is designed as a distinctly contemporary counterpart that complements the scale and character of the original heritage building. Its material palette, including recycled timber and rammed earth, reflects the natural landscape and regional identity of Margaret River.
