Shaped as one continuous coastal façade, the Beachside Leighton terraces read as a single building—calm, robust and held together by a screen that shifts with the light.
Leighton Beachside Terraces
Running along Curtin Avenue, the terraces form the eastern edge of the precinct and respond to the larger scale of Leighton’s coastal and industrial setting. Rather than seven individual houses, the building is conceived as a unified frontage, with each dwelling offering a flexible ground-floor space suited to small-scale commercial use or ancillary accommodation.
The defining element is the eastern screen, which mediates between residents and the movement of Curtin Avenue while maintaining passive surveillance over the street and rail line. Its pattern, drawn from abstracted limestone formations at nearby Cable Station Beach, gives the building a strong sense of place and sets up a memorable corner gesture that leads the eye toward the ocean.

Inside, living spaces are arranged around private courtyards that temper sun, wind and noise. Adjustable louvres and screened openings filter daylight and shape views, creating a sequence of rooms animated by shifting patterns of light. Durable materials—precast concrete, rammed concrete and anodised aluminium—ensure longevity in the harsh coastal environment while keeping the overall expression quiet and understated.
