Comben Place House

Comben Place is a mixed-use infill development in North Fremantle. A personal ‘case study’ project where we are the client, architect and builder, testing some ideas – spatial & material.

Built over three stories with ROW access, the project maximises the site’s density by building to the boundary on three sides, as permitted within the ‘mixed use’ zone. It incorporates a self contained ground floor space for ‘commercial’ use as a studio or ancillary accommodation. Above is a two level, three bedroom ‘caretakers’ apartment with a terrace.

Our conceptual design approach was to create two flexible spaces within a robust, rammed concrete shell in response to the challenging site conditions – a ‘no mans land’ future road reserve to the north, residential to the south and east, mixed commercial warehouses and a train line to the west.

The architectural language is simple and direct, seeking a scale that is compatible with the bounding urban form that adjoins the site.
