Bread in Common

This project brings new life to a former warehouse by pairing two complementary uses—an artisan bakery and a restaurant—within the existing heritage shell.

Rather than heavily reworking the building, the approach was to reveal its character and allow the new program to sit comfortably within it. The owners’ vision was simple: celebrate the beauty of everyday craft, from the making of bread to the shared experience of a meal, with both venues connected by the idea of “bread in common.”

We treated the building much like the baking process itself—honest, hands-on and grounded in its material qualities. Layers added over time were pared back to expose the timber trusses, brick walls and ridge lantern of the original early-1900s pharmaceutical warehouse, later used as a marine workshop. These elements form a textured backdrop to the new interiors, which play gently with the contrast between handmade detail and the warehouse’s soft, shadowed light.

The bakery sits toward the rear, where wood-fired ovens and the dough-shaping bench become part of the spatial experience. A timber mezzanine above provides a small administrative area. The remaining volume forms the dining room and bar—a generous, open space that feels both industrial and warm. Together, the two uses inhabit the building as one cohesive, lively place.
