'What If?' Fremantle

Growing Together reimagines urban life as a dynamic, intergenerational community where children, families, and older adults can thrive. Enabled by a Community Land Trust (CLT) model, this project advocates for affordability, flexible housing, and participatory urban design, ensuring a
socially enriching and sustainable future.

Cities often sideline children, yet they bring vitality and curiosity to urban spaces. Growing Together imagines the city through the eyes of a child, a place in which adults and kids share the same world without land-use conflicts. It integrates car-free courtyards, rooftop gardens, and play structures throughout the development, and pavements and green spaces that children can appropriate, transforming the city into a safe and stimulating playground.

Housing should evolve with its residents. Our adaptable apartments feature modular walls, double height ceilings, and reconfigurable spaces that can be shaped by families, young professionals, and retirees alike. This flexibility allows homes to grow and change over time, fostering long-term community investment and eliminating the rigidity of standardised housing. Residents can even take a hands-on approach, contributing to the fit-out of their dwellings to lower costs and enhance personalisation.

At the heart of Growing Together is intergenerational living. Shared spaces—co-living areas, community kitchens, and mentorship hubs—encourage connections between generations. Older residents share skills and wisdom with younger families while benefiting from companionship and a sense of belonging. This exchange transforms the development into a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem of care and collaboration. Through the CLT model, land remains community-owned, ensuring permanent affordability and resisting speculative market forces. Residents shape their surroundings through participatory planning, reinforcing a sense of collective ownership.

In contrast to business-as-usual urban developments, Growing Together offers a bold vision—one that embraces adaptability, community, and the joy of urban childhood – and embeds affordability. It is not just a place to live, but a place to grow.
